Isan is not all barren and dry like many people think. Over in the western part of the Northeast is the Phu Khieo-Nam Nao Forest Complex, which incorporates 19 protected areas, covering some 7,725km2 (12 national parks and seven wildlife sanctuaries) in the provinces of Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Loei, Phetchabun and Lop Buri. The complex incorporates a number of large forests on the Phetchabun and upper Dong Phayayen ranges. Phu Khieo, established in May 1972, is the largest sanctuary in the complex at 1,560km2, made up of a rocky plateau and steep mountains. The protected area is covered in forests of pine, deciduous, dry dipterocarp and evergreen with many streams that flow into the Chi, Lam Phrom and Sa Phung rivers.

Only 2 1/2 hours from Bangkok, you can reach Pa Ngam Mountain Lodge.

Route 1 : Start from Motorway(Expressway) Heading east to Chacheangsao province. Turn left at Exit km.46 (Chachengsao Exit) and keep on driving 13 km. Then turn right at T-junction heading to Panom Sarakarm – Kabinburi – Korat (Highway 304) for 140 km. Pa Ngam Mountain Lodge will be on your right. [Fastest route]

Route 2 : Take Rangsit-Ongkarak ( Highway 305 ) through the Nakhon Nayok’s downtown.Take the right turn to highway No.33 until you reach Kabinburi intersection. Then, turn left to highway No.304, and go straight for 48 kilometers. There, you will find Pa Ngam Mountain Lodge.

Route 3 : Take Suwintawong road to pass Chacheangsao’s Downtown,turn left to join Haighway 304 and heading to Panom Sarakarm – Kabinburi – Korat. [The same direction as Route 1]

Alternatively, you can take the commuter van route : Bangkok-Pakthongchai (easily recognized by Pa Ngam ‘s Sticker) from the Victory Monument terminal in front of Rajavidhi Hospital .Start every hours since 6 am. The official name of “Wat Phra Kaew” (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) is “Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram” which was built in the precincts of the Royal Palace (The Grand Palace). The temple is definitely an architectural wonder. Hundreds of tourists around the world are visiting Wat Phra Kaew in weekday and up to thousands during weekend.

You’ll be impressed since the first step by the overall construction and decoration of the temple – polished orange-green roof tiles, gold & colors mosaic-encrusted pillars, the gilt bronze figures of mythical beings and the huge Demon Gate Guardians standing. On the way to the Emerald Buddha image, 178 sections of Ramakien (Thai version of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana) mural painting on the inside walls will slow you down because of its outstanding artistry and elegance.

It’s worth to spend a little more time inside the temple just to look around and breathe in the holy moment.

Some simple rules

• Wear appropriately. Don’t go in shorts, pants, or sleeveless shirt, or other unsuitable dress – sandals and flip-flops are also not allowed.

• Spared at least an extra hour from your initial plan. Many people usually end up spending more in Wat Phara Kaew than they expected.
